Reclaim the Rain - October 2024

Extract from October 2024 Newsletter;

Across Norfolk a range of different options are progressing well.

In Watton, plans are at a tender stage, with the detailed designs for tree pits along the High Street progressing ahead of installation. The tree pits will allow water to be stored below ground and for the trees to then absorb any excess water.

In Thompson, Sean and Chris are in the process of writing a scope to set out the design aspirations for re-aligning the watercourse in the Millennium Green. This work will support future willow tree planting, by ensuring there is sufficient excess water in high flows. In ~15 years these willow trees will be harvested and made into cricket bats before another set of willows are re-planted.

In Woodton, scope and tender documents are being finalised to enable soil testing on an agricultural site. This work will encourage more water to effectively infiltrate into the ground via aeration of the soil. This would mean that more water is available in the soil, for crops to be efficiently uptake and use. This scheme will not only support crop yields and business, but also take away surface water flows during rainfall events.

In Thompson, one of our rain gauges attracted some playful sheep, who subsequently destroyed the first fence protecting the gauge. Luckily, part-time construction connoisseur Sean, and assistant Chris, were on the case to create a fence that the sheep will, (hopefully) have a harder time breaking through.
